Tummy tuck at a glance

Every visit, without exception

Four things that are true of every visit

Care by an OB/GYN

Every plan at Oshun is reviewed by a board-certified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr. Rockhead is a physician first, the same one who treats women's health on the other side of his practice.

30 years caring for women

Three decades as a practicing OB/GYN at Amadeo Medical Group, the parent clinical practice. Every tummy tuck plan is reviewed by a physician who has cared for women through pregnancy, surgery, perimenopause, and post-natal recovery.

Written plan first

Every tummy tuck patient leaves consultation with a written plan: what the surgery involves, timing, recovery, cost.

Conservative, considered

Oshun's approach favours conservative, considered care over aggressive intervention. Decisions are made in conversation with you, options are presented in plain language, and consent is informed at every step.

01Tummy tuck 101

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is cosmetic surgery to improve the shape of the abdomen. It removes loose skin and excess fat, and in most cases it tightens abdominal muscles that have weakened or separated. It is body contouring surgery, not a weight-loss treatment.

It is one of the cosmetic surgery procedures offered at Oshun Cosmetic Services in Kingston, alongside liposuction and Renuvion skin tightening.

Full and partial tummy tucks
There are two main types. A partial tummy tuck works on the area below the belly button through one incision across the lower abdomen. A full tummy tuck uses an incision from hip to hip, just above the pubic area, and a second incision around the belly button. The abdominal muscles are realigned as part of a full tummy tuck. Which one suits you is decided at consultation.
What it can address
Loose skin on the abdomen that exercise cannot remove, for example after pregnancy or after losing a lot of weight. A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, although those on the skin being removed may be removed or improved.

The honest version

A tummy tuck is major surgery.

It is not a route to losing weight. It is usually recommended only for people who are already at a healthy, stable weight.

The scar is permanent. It runs across the lower abdomen, and a full tummy tuck leaves a second scar around the belly button. The NHS says raised scars should fade over 12 to 18 months. They do not disappear.

Timing matters as well. The result can be greatly diminished by large changes in weight. For that reason the American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises postponing a tummy tuck if you are planning substantial weight loss or may want a future pregnancy.

At Oshun, all of this is talked through at consultation, including the option not to go ahead.

03Your surgery

What happens before, during and after tummy tuck surgery?

The first step below is how it works at Oshun. The other three are general published guidance, and your own plan may differ.

i.

Consultation

Before any tummy tuck is scheduled, you meet Dr. Rockhead in person at 9 Devon Road. He reviews your medical history, examines you as appropriate, and explains the options, including the option not to proceed. You leave with a clear written plan and a quote.

ii.

Preparation

You may be asked to have lab tests or a medical evaluation, to adjust certain medications, and to stop smoking. Aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines and herbal supplements can increase bleeding, so you may be asked to avoid them beforehand.

iii.

The tummy tuck operation

Tummy tuck surgery is usually done under general anaesthetic and can take between two and five hours. In a full tummy tuck the surgeon makes an incision from hip to hip, frees the belly button, realigns the abdominal muscles, removes the excess skin and fat, and closes the skin.

iv.

Recovery & follow-up

You go home in dressings and a support garment, and thin drainage tubes may be in place for a short time. A follow-up visit after a few weeks checks that the wound is healing well.

Anaesthetic
Full and partial tummy tucks are both usually done under general anaesthetic. Your anaesthesia plan is confirmed at consultation.
How long surgery takes
The operation can take between two and five hours.
Overnight stay
NHS guidance says most people stay in hospital for a few nights. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that a tummy tuck can also be done as an outpatient. Whether you stay overnight, and where, is confirmed at consultation. Either way, someone will need to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
Time off after
Plan for about four to six weeks away from work and exercise. You will not be able to drive for the first few weeks.
04Recovery & aftercare

How long does tummy tuck recovery take?

It takes about six weeks to recover fully and to see the full effect of a tummy tuck. At first it can be hard to stand up straight, because the abdomen feels pulled. That eases with time.

The first days
Pain and bruising are expected. Pain relief can be provided if you need it.
The first six weeks
A support garment is usually worn for six weeks to help the skin heal and to reduce swelling. Take things gently during this time, and keep your knees bent in bed so that the stitches are not put under strain. Most usual activities can restart after about six weeks.
Scars and sensation
Scars can look raised and red, or different from your usual skin colour. The NHS says they should fade over 12 to 18 months; the American Society of Plastic Surgeons says several months to a year. Numbness in the abdomen is common and can last from a few months to years.
05Is a tummy tuck right for you

Who is a tummy tuck right for?

Who it suits
People who are physically healthy, at a stable weight, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations of what surgery can do.
Who should wait
A tummy tuck is not a procedure for someone who is overweight. It is also better postponed if you are planning a pregnancy or substantial weight loss. Previous abdominal surgery can limit the result, so tell Dr. Rockhead about any at your consultation.
What the risks are
Risks include bleeding, infection, a collection of blood under the skin (haematoma), fluid collecting under the skin (seroma), a blood clot in a vein, heart and lung complications, breathing problems, wounds that heal poorly or fail to heal, loss of skin or of the fatty tissue beneath it, numbness or other changes in skin sensation, persistent pain, asymmetry, thick or obvious scarring, looseness of the skin returning, and anaesthetic complications. Occasionally a second operation is needed. How likely each one is for you, and how it would be treated, should be explained to you before you consent.

Four common reasons people ask about a tummy tuck are below. If one sounds like you, a consultation at 9 Devon Road is the next step.

06Cost & booking
