Your hymen proves nothing.
The hymen is a thin fold of tissue at the entrance to the vagina. It differs from woman to woman, it does not always tear or bleed the first time, and no doctor can tell from it whether a woman has had sex. Some families still treat a blood-spotted sheet as proof. If you are under pressure because of that, you have done nothing wrong. If you are in immediate danger, call the police on 119. Private question? The surgeon stitches the remaining edges of the hymen together with stitches that dissolve, or builds a new fold from the lining of the vagina.
Bleeding the first time
Not every woman bleeds the first time. The hymen has few blood vessels, and it can stretch or tear before a woman ever has sex, through sport or using tampons. When it does break, the Cleveland Clinic says, some women have pain or light bleeding, but most feel nothing.
Can a doctor tell?
No. The World Health Organization says there is no known examination that can prove whether a woman has had sex, and that virginity is not a medical or scientific term. It says virginity testing must end.
Does the operation make you bleed?
Results differ from woman to woman, and Dr. Rockhead talks you through what to expect for you before anything is booked. A UK government expert panel says a woman faces added risks if anyone finds out she had the operation.
Why women choose it
Women choose it for personal or family reasons, most often before a wedding. Whatever your reason, you have done nothing wrong.
If the wedding is close
Complete healing can take up to three months, and we ask for no sex for four to six weeks afterwards. Tell Dr. Rockhead the date at your consultation, before anything is booked.
Before you decide
If you feel you have no choice.
Many women who ask for this operation are under pressure from their family or a fiancé's family. If that is you, you have done nothing wrong.
In one Dutch study, reported in the UK panel's background paper, the women first talked their choices through. More than half then chose something other than surgery, such as another way to show blood on the night, or chose to do nothing. Eleven of them were spoken to again later. None had been accused of not being a virgin, though one woman's marriage abroad had been called off after someone there declared she was not a virgin.
You can talk it through with Dr. Rockhead and book nothing else. When you book, you can ask to be seen on your own, so that you do not have to ask in front of anyone on the day. If someone else booked for you, ask on the day.

Who do you meet, and what can you tell him?
Dr. Charles Rockhead, a gynaecologist, in person, at 9 Devon Road in Kingston. He explains what to expect, including the choice not to have it. He may ask to examine you: you can say no, and you can ask for a woman on our staff to be in the room. A doctor keeps what you tell him private, but the law sets some limits to that. Before you tell him anything you are unsure about, ask him what he would have to pass on, and to whom. Nothing is booked at this visit.
After a sexual assault
This operation does not replace care after rape or sexual assault. What helps is care from a doctor or a hospital, tests for infection, emergency contraception if it is needed, and someone to talk to. The UK panel was told the operation may cause flashbacks. It was not your fault.
If you are under 18
This operation is not for you. If someone is pushing you towards it, that is not your fault. Tell Dr. Rockhead your age. You can first ask him what he would have to pass on, and to whom.

Tell us every medicine you take. If you take a blood thinner, do not stop it on your own. We plan the day so that it does not fall during your period.

The anaesthetic
The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic. Sedation, a medicine that makes you drowsy, may be offered as well. With sedation you need a responsible adult to take you home, and you must not drive or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours. If nobody can come with you, say so when you book, and ask about having the local anaesthetic alone.

It takes 30 to 60 minutes, in the procedure room at 9 Devon Road. Dr. Rockhead performs the operation himself. Ask who gives and watches the sedation.

You go home the same day. Ask us what to take for pain: it can be hard to walk or sit for a long time afterwards.

For heavy bleeding, or for trouble breathing after sedation.
Call us straight away
On (876) 676-6297, for bleeding that does not stop, a fever, a discharge that smells bad, pain that is getting worse, or stitches that have come apart. We are closed at night and from Friday to Sunday. If we are closed, do not wait for us: go to a hospital.
How long healing takes
The panel's paper says women should be able to return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours, and that complete healing takes up to three months. The pain can outlast those first two days.
Sex, tampons, swimming and hard exercise
We ask you to avoid all four for four to six weeks.
Check-ups
We see you at two weeks and at six weeks.
05Risks
The risks, and who should not have it.
The risks
The UK guidance calls the risk of infection high. You can bleed during the operation. It can leave scarring and narrow the opening of the vagina. It can leave less feeling, or pain where there was pleasure, and difficulties with sex. It can be painful afterwards. Bleeding on the night differs from woman to woman.
Your mental health
The psychological risks the panel lists include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and reduced or no desire for sex.
Sedation
Sedation is usually safe. If too much of the medicine is given, problems with breathing may occur.
Who should not have it
We don't do it in pregnancy, with a genital infection, with a bleeding disorder or a blood thinner that cannot be safely paused, or where more surgery than this would be needed. It is not for anyone under 18.
