Questions answered privately
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal uses pulses of focused light to reduce how much hair grows back.
The light is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair. That damages the follicle the hair grows from, so less hair returns.
It is a reduction, and not always a complete removal. After a planned series of visits, most patients see a long-term reduction in the treated hair. Some need a maintenance visit every 6 to 12 months.
The words, explained
- Follicle
- The small pocket in the skin that a hair grows from.
- Melanin
- The pigment that gives hair and skin their colour. It is what the laser targets.
- Growth cycle
- Hair grows in phases. Only hairs in the active growth phase respond on the day, which is why visits are spaced weeks apart.
Four things that are true of every visit

The short answers first. The detail is on the pages linked further down.
How it feels
Most patients describe each pulse as a brief snap or a warm pinch. The handpiece cools the skin as it works, and numbing cream can be added for sensitive areas.
How long a visit takes
5 to 10 minutes for a small area such as the upper lip or underarms. 45 to 60 minutes for full legs or back.
Time off afterwards
None. Mild redness settles within a few hours and you can return to work the same day.
Where
In the procedure room at Oshun, 9 Devon Road, Kingston.
Who it suits
Unwanted hair on the face, underarms, bikini line, legs, back or chest. Results are limited on fine, blonde or grey hair.
When to wait
A recent tan or sunburn on the area, isotretinoin in the last six months, an active skin infection or open wound, certain skin conditions in the area, medicines that make skin sensitive to light, or pregnancy.
The visit, step by step
The consultation
You meet Dr. Rockhead in person at 9 Devon Road before anything is booked. He reviews your medical history with you. You leave with a written quote.
Before your visit
Shave the area in the 24 hours before your visit. Do not wax, pluck or use depilatory creams for four weeks beforehand. Avoid sun and tanning for two weeks before.
At the visit
The area is wiped clean and the cooling tip is set on the skin. Dr. Rockhead passes the laser across the area in overlapping pulses, at settings chosen for your skin type.
Afterwards
Use SPF 30 or higher on treated areas every day for four weeks. Avoid hot showers, saunas, pools and exercise for 24 hours. Stay out of the sun and off tanning beds until the course ends. Results are assessed about three months after the course ends.
Why can't it be done in one visit?
At the shortest spacing, six visits take about five months. Longer spacing or more visits takes longer, so a February start matters for summer.
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects hairs that are in their active growth phase on the day. Each visit reaches a different share of them. That is why one visit reduces hair for a few weeks, and a full series gives a longer-lasting reduction. Some patients need top-up visits.
Spacing matters too. Visits are timed to catch the next group of hairs as they come into growth. So the plan is written at your consultation, with the areas, the number of visits and the timing.
Darker skin needs the right settings. Dr. Rockhead chooses them for your skin tone and performs the treatment himself.
