What is testosterone optimization?

Testosterone optimization is medical treatment that brings testosterone back to a normal level in men whose blood tests show it is low.

Low testosterone is diagnosed from blood tests, not from symptoms alone. Many men with tiredness and low drive have a normal level, and something else will help them more.

Where treatment is right, it is given as a gel, an injection, or a small pellet placed under the skin. Regular blood tests monitor it.

The words, explained

Testosterone
A hormone made mainly in the testicles. It affects drive, energy, muscle and mood.
Low testosterone
A level below the normal range, confirmed on a repeat blood test. When it comes with symptoms, doctors call it hypogonadism.
PSA
A blood test used to check the prostate. Men over 40 have it before treatment starts.

Why June

Tired and flat is not always just age.

June is Men's Health Month.

Low energy, lower drive and losing muscle have many possible causes. Sleep, stress, weight, medication, and sometimes low testosterone. Symptoms alone cannot tell them apart.

At Oshun, laboratory testing follows the consultation: a morning, fasting testosterone level, repeated to confirm a low result, and the related bloodwork, reviewed by Dr. Rockhead. Treatment is for documented low levels, and it is monitored with follow-up blood tests.

The same consultation is the place to raise what often goes unsaid, including erections, hair and energy. It is a private conversation with a physician.

What patients ask

How is low testosterone diagnosed?
With a morning, fasting blood test. One low result is not enough. The test is repeated to confirm it.
Will treatment affect my fertility?
Yes. Testosterone treatment lowers the body's own production and sperm production. Men planning children should delay treatment or use another approach, so say so at the consultation.
Does testosterone cause prostate cancer?
Current evidence does not show that it does. It can speed the growth of a cancer that is already there, which is why screening before and during treatment is part of the plan.
What are the risks?
A raised red blood cell count, fluid retention, acne, lower fertility, possible effects on the prostate, and changes in mood. Monitoring is there to catch these early.
How soon would I feel a difference?
Drive often improves within two to four weeks. Energy and mood tend to follow at four to eight weeks.
Which form of treatment is best?
Gel, injection and pellet all work. The choice depends on convenience, how steady the dose needs to be, and what you prefer.
