Questions answered privately
What is the annual gynaecological exam?
The annual gynaecological exam is a yearly women's health visit: your history, blood pressure and weight, a breast examination, a pelvic examination, and cervical screening when it is due.
It is also the time to talk. Contraception, menopause, how often you need screening, and any concern you bring are all part of the visit.
At Oshun the visit is kept longer, so that conversation has room to happen.
The words, explained
- Pelvic examination
- The doctor's check of the vagina, cervix, uterus and ovaries.
- Pap test
- A small sample of cells from the cervix, checked for early changes.
- HPV test
- A test for human papillomavirus. It can be done from the same sample as the Pap test.
Four things that are true of every visit
Care by an OB/GYN
Every plan at Oshun is reviewed by a board-certified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr. Rockhead is a physician first.
30 years caring for women
Three decades as a practising OB/GYN at Amadeo Medical Group, the parent clinical practice.
In person, first
A consultation with Dr. Rockhead comes before anything is booked. You decide afterwards, with no obligation.
Private, one to one
The care team answers your questions privately on WhatsApp. There is no obligation.

The short answers first. The detail is on the pages linked further down.
How it feels
The speculum is warmed and the examination is as gentle and quick as possible. You can ask for a slower pace or a break at any point.
How long a visit takes
45 to 60 minutes for a first visit. 30 to 45 minutes for a returning patient.
Time off afterwards
None. You can return to everything straight away.
Where
In the examination room at Oshun, 9 Devon Road, Kingston.
Who it suits
Preventive screening, any symptom you want checked such as unusual bleeding, pain or discharge, and advice on contraception.
When to wait
Nothing rules the visit out. If you are pregnant, tell us, because it changes which screening is right.
The visit, step by step
The consultation
You meet Dr. Rockhead in person at 9 Devon Road before anything is booked. He reviews your medical history with you. You leave with a written quote.
Before your visit
Book outside your period where you can. Bring records of past gynaecological care, a list of your medicines, and the concerns you want to raise. If a Pap test is due, no douching, vaginal medicines or intercourse for 48 hours before.
At the visit
Dr. Rockhead reviews your history and takes your vital signs. Then a breast examination and a pelvic examination. A Pap test is collected if one is due.
Afterwards
Carry on as normal. Spotting for a day or two after a Pap test is normal. Pap and HPV results are typically ready within one to two weeks, and you are told the result and any next step in writing.
One visit for the checks you keep putting off.
May holds Mother's Day and, on the 28th, the International Day of Action for Women's Health.
It begins with a conversation: your history, how your periods have been, anything that has changed since last year. Then blood pressure and weight, a breast examination and a pelvic examination.
Cervical screening is done at the same visit when it is due: a Pap test, with HPV testing where it is indicated. Those two tests are priced separately. Dr. Rockhead also explains your screening schedule, so you are not left guessing.
The rest of the time is yours. Contraception, changes around menopause, or a concern you haven't known who to ask about.
