Mounjaro at a glance

Every visit, without exception

Four things that are true of every visit

Care by an OB/GYN

Every procedure at Oshun is reviewed and led by a board-certified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. Dr. Rockhead is a physician first — the same one who treats women's health on the other side of his practice.

30 years caring for women

Three decades as a practicing OB/GYN at Amadeo Medical Group, the parent clinical practice. Every Medical Weight Loss plan is reviewed by a physician who has cared for women through pregnancy, surgery, perimenopause, and post-natal recovery.

Written plan first

Every Medical Weight Loss patient leaves consultation with a written plan: areas, technique, timing, recovery, cost. Returning patients refine the same plan rather than starting from scratch every visit.

Conservative, considered

Oshun's approach favours conservative, considered care over aggressive intervention. Decisions are made in conversation with you, options are presented in plain language, and consent is informed at every step.

01Mounjaro 101

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine whose active substance is tirzepatide. It is injected under the skin once a week from a prefilled pen, on the same day each week, according to the European Medicines Agency. Tirzepatide acts in the same way as two hormones made in the gut, GLP-1 and GIP, which the agency says reduces appetite and helps people manage their weight.

Active substance
Tirzepatide. Mounjaro is the brand name; tirzepatide is the medicine inside it.
How it is taken
One injection a week under the skin of the belly, the thigh or the upper arm, according to the European Medicines Agency.
What it is authorised for
In the European Union, Mounjaro is authorised for type 2 diabetes and, together with diet and physical activity, to help adults lose weight and keep it under control, according to the European Medicines Agency.
Who the weight authorisation covers
Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or a BMI between 27 and 30 with weight-related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure or obstructive sleep apnoea, according to the European Medicines Agency.
How it is obtained
By prescription. At Oshun it is prescribed only after an in-person consultation.

The honest version

Mounjaro works alongside diet and activity.

In the European Union, Mounjaro is authorised for weight management together with diet and physical activity, not in place of them, according to the European Medicines Agency.

Mounjaro is a medicine for a medical condition. Its maker, Eli Lilly, says in an open letter that it is not approved for, and should not be used for, cosmetic weight loss.

Weight often returns when the medicine is stopped. In a study described in Mounjaro's product information, people who stopped it regained a substantial part of the weight they had lost, even though they kept receiving diet and activity advice. Plan with Dr. Rockhead for what happens after the medicine.

Our medical weight loss page explains the whole programme: nutrition, activity, monthly follow-up, and what to expect when the medicine stops.

04Mounjaro or Ozempic

Mounjaro or Ozempic: what is the difference?

Mounjaro and Ozempic are both once-weekly injections, but they contain different active substances. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts like two gut hormones, GLP-1 and GIP. Ozempic contains semaglutide, which acts like GLP-1 alone, according to the European Medicines Agency.

05Safety & who it is for

What are the side effects of Mounjaro?

The most common side effects of Mounjaro, which may affect more than 1 in 10 people, are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhoea, and low blood glucose when it is used with insulin or a sulphonylurea, according to the European Medicines Agency.

Who should not take a GLP-1 medicine
A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN-2, severe gastrointestinal disease, pregnancy, or a history of severe pancreatitis.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Mounjaro is not recommended during pregnancy and should be stopped at least 1 month before a planned pregnancy, according to its product information. Use contraception while you are taking it. Tell Dr. Rockhead if you are breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.
If you take the contraceptive pill
Mounjaro may make the contraceptive pill less reliable. The maker's US prescribing information and the UK medicines regulator both advise switching to a non-oral method, or adding a barrier method such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase. The EU product information does not ask for this. Ask Dr. Rockhead what applies to you, and tell him which contraception you use.
Before surgery or sedation
Tell your surgeon and your anaesthetist that you take this medicine. Its product information warns that food can stay in the stomach longer, which matters under general anaesthesia or deep sedation.
When to contact the clinic
Report unusual nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or any new symptoms.
When it is urgent
See a doctor straight away for severe pain in the stomach area that does not go away, which can be a sign of an inflamed pancreas. Get medical help straight away for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. Do not wait for your next visit.
The full list
The package leaflet lists all side effects and restrictions. Ask for it, read it, and ask at your monthly visit about anything in it.

These are common patient profiles in the weight loss programme. They describe the programme, not who this medicine is authorised for. If one sounds like you, an in-person consultation at 9 Devon Road is the next step.
