Questions answered privately
What is Emsella?
Emsella is a chair that uses electromagnetic energy to make the pelvic floor muscles contract. It is a non-invasive treatment designed to strengthen them.
You sit on it fully clothed. Each visit produces thousands of strong pelvic floor contractions, done for you.
It conditions muscle. It does not repair a structural problem such as a significant prolapse.
The words, explained
- Pelvic floor
- The group of muscles that supports the bladder, bowel and uterus.
- Stress incontinence
- A leak of urine with a cough, a sneeze or exercise.
- Urge incontinence
- A leak of urine that comes with a sudden, strong need to go, or just after it.
Four things that are true of every visit
Care by an OB/GYN

At a glance
The short answers first. The detail is on the pages linked further down.
How it feels
A strong but tolerable tightening of the pelvic floor, like an intense Kegel done for you. No anaesthetic, no needles, no undressing.
How long a visit takes
28 minutes on the chair. Allow about 45 minutes in all.
Time off afterwards
None. You can drive yourself home and go back to everything, including exercise.
Where
In the treatment room at Oshun, 9 Devon Road, Kingston.
Who it suits
Leaks with a cough, sneeze or exercise, a sudden urge to pass urine, and mild pelvic floor weakness after childbirth or menopause.
When to wait
Not with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, metal implants in the area, a copper IUD, or during pregnancy. It also waits during your period, with a urinary infection, or within six weeks of pelvic surgery.
The visit, step by step
The consultation
You meet Dr. Rockhead in person at 9 Devon Road before anything is booked. He reviews your medical history with you. You leave with a written quote.
Before your visit
Empty your bladder, wear loose clothing, and take metal out of your pockets: jewellery, phone, keys and coins.
At the visit
You sit on the chair fully clothed. Dr. Rockhead or a trained Oshun clinician sets the intensity to a level that is strong but comfortable, and raises it gradually as you adapt.
Afterwards
Carry on as normal. The course is reviewed at the end of the six visits, when you discuss whether maintenance visits are worthwhile.
Leaks are common after having children. You don't simply have to accept them.
November is Bladder Health Month. Stress incontinence often follows childbirth and menopause.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that supports the bladder. Pregnancy, birth and menopause can weaken it, and a weak pelvic floor lets urine escape under pressure.
Emsella is a chair-shaped device that uses focused electromagnetic energy to make those muscles contract, thousands of times in one visit. You stay fully clothed. The usual plan is six visits, twice a week, for mild stress incontinence and pelvic floor weakness.
Leaks have more than one cause. So the first step is a consultation with Dr. Rockhead, to find out which kind you have and whether Emsella suits it.
- The treatment
- Emsella, a non-invasive chair that works the pelvic floor while you sit.
- The plan
- Six visits, twice a week.
- First step
- A consultation with Dr. Rockhead before anything is booked.
When not to waitBlood in the urine, pain when passing urine, or a sudden change in bladder control should be checked by a doctor promptly. If it comes with back pain, numbness or weakness in the legs, or you cannot pass urine, go to emergency care.
