In plain English

What is menopause management?

Menopause management is medical care for the years around your last period. It looks at hot flushes, sleep, mood, sexual health, bones, heart and weight together, not one at a time.

It is not a single treatment. It combines hormone therapy where that is appropriate, non-hormonal options, changes to daily habits, and screening.

Dr. Rockhead writes the plan at your consultation and reviews it with you at follow-up visits.

The words, explained

Menopause
The point twelve months after your last period.
Perimenopause
The years leading up to menopause, when many symptoms begin.
HRT
Hormone replacement therapy. It replaces oestrogen, with progesterone if you still have a uterus.

Why October

It can start years before the last period.

October is World Menopause Month, with World Menopause Day on the 18th.

Menopause is reached when a woman has gone twelve months without a period, with no other cause. The years leading up to it are called perimenopause, and that is when many symptoms begin: irregular periods, poor sleep, changes in mood, hot flushes, and dryness or discomfort during sex.

Because it can arrive gradually, the symptoms are not always recognised as perimenopause. You don't have to live with them. They can be assessed and managed.

Hormone replacement therapy replaces oestrogen, with progesterone where the uterus is present. It is not suited to everyone. The consultation covers whether it fits your history, and what the non-hormonal options are if it does not.

What it covers
Hot flushes, sleep, mood, sexual health, bone health, heart risk and weight changes.
Options
Hormone replacement therapy, or non-hormonal management, decided with you.
First step
A consultation with Dr. Rockhead.

What patients ask

Do I need hormone therapy?
Not necessarily. It is one option among several. Whether it is right for you depends on your symptoms, your risks and what you prefer.
What if I do not want hormones?
There are effective non-hormonal options, including certain prescription medicines, talking therapy and lifestyle changes. Oestrogen used only in the vagina reaches the rest of the body very little.
Will my bones get weaker?
Bone density falls after menopause as oestrogen drops. A bone density scan every one to two years keeps track of it.
What about brain fog and memory?
These symptoms are real. They often improve once hot flushes and sleep are better managed.
When does menopause start?
Menopause is diagnosed 12 months after the last period, typically around age 51. The years before it often bring more symptoms than menopause itself.
Will my sex life change?
Often, yes. Desire, arousal and lubrication can all shift during the transition. Many of these changes have specific treatments.

This page is general information, not a diagnosis or medical advice. Whether a treatment suits you is decided at a consultation with Dr. Rockhead.
